The band is a group of local and area music enthusiasts who enjoy playing traditional and contemporary tunes on numerous occasions throughout the year. The band’s wide repertoire ranges from the classics to the latest movie scores. The band practices on Thursdays from 7:30 9:30pm at the Good Shepherd Church on Howard and Lee Street in Des Plaines. Lawrence J. Carle, the founding director, conducts.

If you’re looking for an opportunity to pick up that high school or college instrument again, the Community Concert Band is currently seeking new members for all sections. The band has two French Horns that can be used by prospective members at no charge.


About the Conductor

Lawrence J. Carle, Conductor, is a retired orchestra and band director from Des Plaines School District 62. He also served for sixteen years as Director of Adult and Children’s Choirs, and organist / pianist at Montrose Baptist Church in Chicago. He currently teaches privately. He has served as a respected judge for a wide variety of student musical competitions in the Chicagoland area. Mr. Carle is a member of the Music Educators' National Conference, National School Orchestra Association, American Teachers Association, National Band Association, World Association of Symphonic Bands & Ensembles, Windjammers Unlimited (Circus Bands), and Association of Concert Bands, Inc., which promotes the formation of community bands throughout the United States, The Conductors Guild, which advances the art, and he has been listed in "Who's Who in the Midwest.” He has also served as guest conductor for various community bands and orchestras in the northwest suburban area. Mr. Carle holds a degree with a double major in Elementary Education and Music Education from Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa, and has been the conductor of the Des Plaines Park District Community Concert Band since it was formed in January 1983.


David Sterling, Associate Director, is also the Principal Trombonist and Announcer for the band. A former member of Dick Anthony’s Sixteen Singing Men and The Discovery Singers from the television program Day of Discovery, Mr.
Sterling is on staff at Christ Church Lake Forest as the Director of Choral Music. He served four years as an instrumentalist with the Tactical Air Command Band at Luke Air Force Base, and earned his Bachelor of Music Degree in Vocal Performance, with a concentration in conducting and arranging, from Wheaton College. A resident of Skokie, Mr. Sterling works for Weigel Broadcasting in programming and as satellite coordinator.
